Pergola or No Pergola, That is the Question

Progress in our yard has been sporadic, but moving forward none the less. We all know I could be better at documenting, so I do not have many pictures. But the concrete work is done and I love it. It was a four step process with pouring the new concrete, resurfacing the old concrete, remember it had tile when we started. Stamping and staining all of it. Advanced Concrete Designs was awesome, every step was done so well and they took meticulous care of our home and cleaned up after each of the steps. It has changed the look more than anything else that we have done so far!
Old Patio
I love the new patio finish.

Look at the unified finish!

We added cedar 6x6 columns to replace the old 4x4 painted ones moving the columns further apart to open up the space even more. We still have trim work to do, but here is the question. Our plan all along was to build a pergola over the outdoor space, but we are liking it open. So pergola or no pergola? I keep thinking the triple digits are coming, but will a pergola make the space anymore  enjoyable when the thermometer reaches 100 plus? For the time being we have decided to finish all of the trim work and wait to see what we think after July and August.

Before the refinish!

How it looks today!

Love the look of the new cedar posts!

I am loving the progress in our yard. We have enjoyed numerous evenings out there together already this year. But the burning question remains, pergola or not? Thoughts, advise or suggestions?

  1. Here's our before and after of a pergola (granted, it's on a garden shed, not a patio): http://www.buildinggreenbc.com/2014/04/03/208-sprint-to-the-finish-day-2-pergola/
    But, it has lovely potential.

  2. Your stained concrete and added patio look great! We added a pergola at our last house. I loved it because it adds some filtered shade. We did make one mistake that I want to share. We planted wisteria on the posts and let it grow up on the top. It's beautiful but it covers so densely that it actually made our house dark. Just a thought...

    1. Stacey, thanks so much! I am concerned about it being dark, our house tends to be dark anyway. I think we are going to live with it for this summer, we can still add it in the fall!

  3. love the stained concrete! i would love to do that, but we are actually in the process of adding a brick patio since the brick was free. i'll cover it with an outdoor rug, anyway. the answer should always be pergola, lol. you can drape lights and flowers from it, and just feel like it's another living space. good luck with your decision!

    1. Thanks for stopping by. I told my husband if we do the pergola, we have to have electricity to it so I can hand lights! lol

  4. As you have a big green backyard, I would suggest with pergola coz you can put a furniture set in the grassyard during sunny days and during rainy days, everyone is safe under it,

    Just my opinion.

    Great patio...

    Happy weekend.
