Small Yard Landscaping

I love backyard entertaining. Here in the Houston area, there are really two seasons of outside living. The spring time is great and can begin as early as February. Then the oppressive heat and humidity not to mention the mosquitoes drive everyone inside especially in July and August, unless you are blessed with a pool. As fall arrives we can move back outside again and that can last into November some years.

When we lived in our previous house our yard was just under 7,000 square feet, including the footprint of the house. That is really pretty typical in the suburbs in our area. I wanted to share what our yard looked like when we moved.

We had a small area covered and we extended the patio area with stamped concrete. We chose to add cedar posts and trim to this area and we loved it! Our entertaining space including a bistro table in the covered area and four adirondack chairs in the sitting area. The new owners liked it so much they purchased the outdoor furniture with  the house!

On our back fence we planted Cypress trees, we wanted to add a visual barrier between us and the two story house behind us as they grew. We also had the box that held the access to the underground utilities in our yard. You can read here  how we took that from an eyesore to a feature. Another problem area was the controls to our sprinkler system. We not only concealed this, we added some storage, you can read here  how we were able to pull that off.

A small yard can be a challenge, but it can also be a great space for you to enjoy with your family and friends with a little planning.

  1. Stopping by from Imparting Grace. We have something similar, however we don't have any shade. I grew up with a wonderful front porch, swing, ceiling fan, the whole nine. So I love sitting on a good porch and being outside, watching life. I wished that we had a great place to sit out, like you did at your other house.
